Oedo Fire Slayer -The Legend of Phoenix- is a twelve-episode action drama set in Edo-period Japan, following Matsunaga Gengo, a legendary fire-fighting samurai known as the "Fire-eating Bird" who once saved the city from a devastating inferno. After years away from the profession, Gengo accepts a position leading the Shinjo clan's struggling fire brigade, a unit so poorly funded and understaffed that the townspeople mockingly call them the "ragged steeplejacks." Alongside his wife Miyuki and a collection of unconventional allies, each carrying their own quirks and histories, Gengo works to rebuild the team's reputation and capability.

As mysterious fires of unknown origin, called "foxfires," begin spreading throughout Edo, Gengo and his misfits race against time to protect innocent lives and uncover the truth behind the attacks. This is an entertaining blend of historical setting, character-driven drama, and high-stakes action sequences centered on the dangerous work of firefighting.
The fire extinguishing samurai who stopped the great fire was called "The fire-eating bird". Matsunaga Gengo, once known as the "Fire-eating Bird", was the best fire-fighting samurai in Edo. He had resigned from the fire brigade for a reason but suddenly received an invitation to serve in the Shinjo clan. The Shinjo clan's fire-fighting team had no money and no personnel and was looked down upon by those around them. With the encouragement of his wife, Miyuki, Gengo decides to rebuild the collapsed fire-fighting clan as its chairman. Gengo and his friends, all of whom have their own peculiarities, struggle to "save any life", despite being ridiculed as "ragged steeplejacks"(= the 'Boro-Tobi-Gumi'.), In Edo, a mysterious series of suspicious fires called "foxfires" continue.
