Fool Night
What is Fool Night?
Fool Night is a psychological sci-fi thriller set in a dystopian future where Earth lies perpetually shrouded in clouds and sunlight no longer reaches the surface. Humanity faces extinction as plants wither and oxygen grows scarce, leading civilization to develop a radical technology: the ability to transform humans into plant life to generate breathable air. This ONA explores the harrowing ethical dilemmas and personal stakes of such a choice through the story of Toshiro Kamiya, a man trapped between impossible options.
Kamiya's desperation drives the narrative. Struggling to afford his mother's medication on meager wages, he becomes a candidate for transfloration—a procedure that would permanently alter his body in exchange for financial compensation. The series examines whether this technology represents humanity's salvation or the ultimate betrayal of what makes us human, asking whether survival justifies such extreme sacrifice.
Fool Night releases as an ONA in fall 2026, beginning November 26. The series combines drama with psychological tension and science fiction worldbuilding to create a thought-provoking narrative about survival, family, and moral compromise in a world where basic human needs have become luxuries. It appeals to viewers who appreciate speculative fiction that grapples with real philosophical questions.
The earth of the distant future is covered in thick clouds, and the sun no longer shines. Plants wither, and oxygen is thin. To fight extinction, humankind has developed a technology that turns humans into plants, providing a small amount of oxygen. Is this process sustainable? Is it ethical? Toshiro Kamiya must consider these questions as he’s faced with a difficult choice—save his family or save himself. Kamiya is at the end of his rope. His mother is ill, and his job barely pays for her medication, much less food. With few options left, he considers the life-changing process of transfloration. Ready to give his body up for a payday, Kamiya is about to explore the limits of society’s waning humanity. (Source: VIZ Media)
